well my name is Arah I am a Junior in High School. I want to be a child psychologist when i get older so I can help change someone's life. I am a dancer and on the dance team at my school. I am a christian and God is the head of my life. I like to read and write and just express myself in positive ways. I am very friendly and random and like to try new things. I have two best friend and they are Makiah and Imogene and they are like my sisters. I have three older brothers and no sisters so I thank God for them. I like to dance, read, swim,and jus hang out. UMMMMMMMM I love to laugh and act crazy and jus do really random things. I jus like to have fun!! = P

African American Heritage Trail: Howard University



1.Howard University Gallery of Art.



The Howard University Gallery of Art was established in 1928.The gallery is one-third of the college's Fine Arts complex. The renowned African artifacts collection began with items donated by collector Alain Locke , who was also a prestigious professor at Howard University. The African American art collection includes works by Henry O. Tanner, Edmonia Lewis, Archibald Motley, Romare Bearden, and many others.










2.Howard University

Howard University is one of the oldest black colleges in the United States. Howard University was designated as “a university for the education of youth in the liberal arts and sciences.” As a university, the institution reflected the founders' desires to educate Negroes and youth.The university also helped give birth to many of the civil rights and black power movements, organizations, institutions and individual leaders.




3.Howard Hall

Howard Hall is the oldest building on the campus. It was originally the home of the white general Oliver Otis Howard. . General Howardwas one of the founders of the school, and because of his instrumental role in its development, the building and university were named after him. It was declared it was a National Historical landmark in 1974 , the building began restoration in 1998 and is now the university alumni center.





4.Kelly Miller Residence Site

Kelly Miller was an educator, writer, and sociologist who came to Howard University's Preparatory Department on scholarship, then graduated from Howard University in 1880. He eventually became a member of the Howard faculty and later on he became dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Miller promoted the teaching of sociology in part because sociology provided a framework for developing analysis of the American racial system. He saw these as a crucial weapon in the battle for civil rights.Miller's house was demolished in 1965 and replaced with Bethune Hall, a Howard University dormitory.



5. Freedman's Hospital

Freedmen's Hospital was established during the Civil War to address the needs of thousands of African Americans who poured into the city seeking freedom.Freedmen's Hospital was established in 1862 by the secretary of war on land bounded by R, S, 12th, and 13th streets, NW.In 1869 the hospital moved to property owned by Howard University at the corner of Fifth and W streets, NW. The hospital also became the teaching hospital for the university. In 1975, Freedmen's Hospital was renamed Howard University Hospital and moved to Georgia and Florida avenues, NW, the former site of Griffith Stadium.
